There's probably no type of contest that better simulates the deadline conditions of real journalism than a write-off competition. No wonder the JEA Write-offs in Orlando attracted more than 2,000 participants. And Illinois students were right in the thick of things.

With one Newspaper Pacemaker, four Best of Shows and five Individual Awards, Illinois was well represented in the winners circle at the 2015 JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention.
JEA Write-off contests are always one of the highlights of JEA/NSPA Conventions. Next months Orlando convention will be no exception, so register for the Write-offs before Wednesdays 6 p.m. CST deadline.

IHSA approves changes to state journalism tournament

The biggest change concerns photography, but five other events were also revised. It's never too early to prepare for the spring tournament, so read on!
This years 2015 IJEA Fall Conference will offer up to 20 students the chance to produce their own broadcast stories, as this student did at last years conference. Other hands-on learning opportunities include covering the conference live as part of the first-ever IJEA Twitter Team and competing in an onsite feature-writing contest. In addition, students and advisers will have dozens of expert sessions to choose from throughout the day. Total conference space is limited to 600 students, so register soon, advisers!

Retired advisers Deb Buttleman Malcolm and Tom Winski have won Lifetime Achievement awards, and Phoenix Military Academy adviser Katie Comeford has earned a Future Teacher Scholarship. Check out the details inside.
The IJEA and Illinois Press Foundation recognized the achievements of some of the states top high school journalists with an awards luncheon Saturday in Springfield at the offices of The State Journal-Register. Honored were Illinois Journalist of the Year Ashley Yong and members of the IJEA All-State Journalism Team. Not all honorees were able to attend the event. With the end of the school year came IJEA's annual awards — a chance to salute some of the most talented j-students in the state.
Kristen DiGiorgio works with senior John Gordon in her journalism class at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School. The first-year adviser recently won an award of $1,000 from the 1 For All First Amendment Challenge for her innovative instructional unit on media law and ethics.

The Bradley-Bourbonnais teacher (and IJEA member) was a national winner in the 1 For All First Amendment Challenge, which recognized inventive approaches to teaching the five foundational freedoms of American democracy.

The newsroom of the future is here, and you can learn all about it at our Fall Conference in September. Staffers from DNAinfo Chicago will deliver our keynote, and the conference will offer plenty of expert sessions.
